artist info
protman is Joe Hahn, based in St. Petersburg, Florida. He’s been making computer music since the late 90s, starting with a DOS computer running Scream Tracker at a high school battle of the bands. He still writes in trackers, mostly Renoise now. The samples come from old records, toys, synths and whatever else is at hand. The sound: abject ambience, off-kilter beats, comical melodies and bendy bass. He plays live with a gamepad rigged as a MIDI controller. He also runs Iron Chef of Music, where everyone gets two hours to make a track from one sample. A bee hive, a balloon popping, ice in a glass. He took part in the Red Bull Music Academy and was a member of Chicago’s K-RAD. WIRE and the Chicago Reader have interviewed him. For this stream he’s playing a batch of new tracks from Fakebeat, his label, where he’s finally splitting the styles of his past songs and influences into separate projects. He mixes them live, using the gamepad and motion capture together to drive the sound and the visuals.
